Director Peter Yates (in a surprising departure from the likes of Bullitt) gives us a lovely, sunlit interpretation of Steve Tesich's Oscar®-winning screenplay, which zeroes in on Dave (Christopher), his eternally exasperated father (the marvelous Paul Dooley), and his understanding mother (Barbara Barrie in divine form); the result is a film that presents us with the Middle America of all our dreams.;
