  • Release Year: 1961
  • Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama, Romance, Suspense/Thriller
  • Plot: HAMMER WASN'T JUST HORROR; ; The legendary British studio is justly revered for its classic horror movies, but they actually made all kinds of pictures, and this first Sony collection of their best films presents four pulse-pounding adventures—all new to DVD—three of them starring Hammer icon Christopher Lee. He's at his snarling best as blood-thirsty buccaneers in the rousing swashbucklers THE PIRATES OF BLOOD RIVER and THE DEVIL-SHIP PIRATES. Then he warms up for his famed Fu Manchu series by playing an evil Chinese crime lord in THE TERROR OF THE TONGS. Rounding out the set is the rarely-seen THE STRANGLERS OF BOMBAY based on the chilling true story of how the British attempted to vanquish the Thuggees, the notorious death cult that terrorized India for centuries. So strap yourself in for the most rip-snorting group of movies since Errol Flynn laid his sword!; ; THE PIRATES OF BLOOD RIVER (1961 / 87 min. / 2.35:1); In a village of Huguenot refugees, Jonathan Standish is exiled by his father to a nearby penal colony for his improper relationship with a married woman. This penal colony is then invaded by pirates who force Jonathan to lead them back to his village, convinced that it contains a great treasure.; ; THE DEVIL-SHIP PIRATES (1963 / 89 min. / 2.35:1); A pirate ship, fighting in 1588 on the side of the Spanish Armada, suffers damage and must put into a village on the British coast for repairs. The village is small and isolated and the Spanish convince the villagers that the English fleet has been defeated and that they, the Spanish, are now their masters. This results in the villagers' sullen cooperation, but rumors and unrest begin to spread and soon the Spanish pirates find themselves facing a revolt.; ; THE STRANGLERS OF BOMBAY (1959 / 80 min. / 2.35:1); A murderous religious cult is way-laying travellers and stealing goods in nineteenth century India. As the disappearances mount and trade becomes difficult, the British East India Company is forced to act. But they give the job to an upper-class officer completely out-of-touch with the country rather than the obvious candidate who has been in India for years and well understands the people and culture.; ; THE TERROR OF THE TONGS (1961 / 76 Min. / 1.66:1); A secret society of Hong-Kong at the beginning of the century called 'The Red Dragon Tong' kidnaps the captain of a ship in the harbour of Hong-Kong as he tries to detain the killers of his daughter. Because the secret society is very powerful it is not easy to free him from their hands.; ; ;
