Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her. Trapped inside the funeral home, with nobody to turn to except Eliot, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her own death. But Anna's grief-stricken boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) still can't shake the nagging suspicion that Eliot isn't what he appears to be. As the funeral nears, Paul gets closer to unlocking the disturbing truth, but it could be too late; Anna may have already begun to cross over to the other side.; ; À la suite d'un terrible accident de voiture, Anna (Christina Ricci) se retrouve à la morgue où Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson), le directeur d'un salon funéraire, s'apprête à embaumer son corps. Confuse, terrorisée et se sentant parfaitement en vie, Anna ne peut croire en son décès. Possédant, semble-t-il, le don de communiquer avec les morts, le docteur tente de convaincre Anna qu'elle est dans une phase de transition vers la mort et que lui seul peut l'aider. Prisonnière de ce lieu lugubre, Anna doit affronter ses peurs les plus viscérales et accepter sa propre mort. Profondément affligé, son amoureux Paul (Justin Long) ne peut cependant dissiper les doutes dans son esprit au sujet du docteur Eliot qu'il croit être un imposteur. Mais à l'approche des funérailles, Paul doit découvrir la vérité avant qu'il ne soit trop tard, car Anna est peut-être déjà dans l'au-delà.
